During a heat wave in 1974 Clayton, Kentucky, the only thing that keeps 16-year-old Bell Davis going is hanging out with her charismatic older cousin, John Hale. But Bell's world crashes down when John is found dead, a mysterious bloody handkerchief in his hand and an unknown phone number in his pocket. Determined to find John's killer, Bell seeks the help of Marshall Tucker, a boy who has a crush on her. As the two wander into the dangerous territory of moonshine, gambling and small-town greed, Bell begins to uncover secrets about John that put their lives at risk. She also discovers the power of redemption and love - and the dangerous lengths John went to achieve these.
